The present issue of 'Road Transport Year Book: 2012-2013 provides a wide range of information, pertaining to motor vehicles, motor vehicle taxation, motor vehicle production and sales, permits and licenses, revenue realization from motor vehicle taxes across States/Union Territories, and million-plus cities in India.

It is informed that due to the same inadvertent errors that crept in the earlier specimen supplementary agreements, it has been now decided to issue the revised specimen supplementary agreements for BOT projects and EPC Contracts, after necessary correction.

Over the years, road transport has become vital to the economic development and social integration of the country. Road transport has attained a dominant position within the transport sector and accounted for a share of 4.7 percent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2010-11. Easy accessibility, flexibility of operations, door-to-door service, reliability, and the growing use of just-in-time strategies in manufacturing have contributed towards a steady increase in the modal share of road transport in the movement of both freight and passengers.

The Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has traditionally been providing inputs by way of data, research, and analysis pertaining to Roads, Road Transport, and Road Accidents in India to the different Divisions of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is entrusted with the task of development, maintenance, and management of National Highways in the Country. The proposals for development and maintenance are framed by the State PWDs and in the case of NHAI by the Consultants.
